Hailed as one of the finest DJs pioneering new music today, British-born DJ Kayper is a seminal force on the urban, mainstream and desi music scenes.
DJ Kayper is one of the most technically skilled and visually impressive DJs out there. Having taught her self deck skills at the age of just twelve, she has quickly gone on to become the first female to win the Vestax Juice DJ Competition in 2004 and has since earned deserving accolades from the likes of Jazzy Jeff, DJ Premier and DJ Yoda.
As well as this, Kayper is Kaajal Bakrania, a producer and radio presenter from the UK who plays open format, blending house and hip hop with reggae, dancehall and rock edits into mesmerizing sonic soundtracks at clubs across the world. She was recently tour DJ for Taio Cruz and has played world beating clubs like London’s Ministry of Sound, Bar Rumba and The Box (where she is resident), as well as New York’s SOB, M2 and The Knitting Factory, with 2012 highlights thus far including gigs at Neon Carnival at Coachella Festival, Hard Rock House (also at Coachella), Akadia in Miami and Love Brunch in London, with tours of Australia, shows at Sundance Festival and SXSW in Austin also now fond memories.
Says Kaper on her residencies… “People always say I need a gimmick – like I should wear a cat suit or something – but I know I don’t need to. I tell them to watch my videos on YouTube and they’ll see that I can really DJ.”
As well as this DJ Kayper has promoted her own event, Ebonics, in the past, and now presents her own popular programme on the BBC Asian Network. For six years she has presented the show – called DJ Kayper – playing a mixture of electronic genres alongside a small portion of Indian influenced music with guests including Drake, Nas, Questlove, Damian Marley and many more.
The final feather in this musical talent’s bow is producing, namely in collaboration with dubstep producer Engine Earz to create “Gimme Some”, a track played by Diplo, MJ Cole and more, with plenty more genre blurring projects in the pipeline.
