Busta Rhymes

Busta Rhymes Bio

A hip-hop giant that needs no introduction.

The born and bred Brooklyn star has conquered the world with his exceptionally quick lyrical skills and a multitude of global hits. With such hits as Woo Hah! Got You All In Check, Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See and Fire It Up, including nine Grammy nominations spanning his twenty-year long career, Busta Rhymes has seen and done it all.

Rhymes launched his musical career as he joined forces with the hip-hop crew Leaders of the New School and together they released their debut album titled A Future Without A Past in 1991 on Elektra Records. The album peaked at #128 on US Billboard 200 and achieved accolades from industry’s most prominent figures, ultimately placing the crew on the map. In the following couple of years they released their second album titled T.I.M.E (The Inner Mind’s Eye), however shortly after the group split up upon which Rhymes pursued a solo career.

By now Rhymes was already known in the music circles as he astounded his audience and fellow artists with his spectacular spitting pace and highly creative cuts. His debut solo album was the critically and commercially acclaimed The Coming featuring the hit track Woo Hah! Got You All In Check; the album reached #6 on US Billboard 200, received a Platinum certification, a Grammy nomination and featured some of the most talented hip-hop artists of that time such as Def Squad members Redman and Keith Murray.

It seemed that with each album the rapper released, a hit was produced despite if the album was wholly successful or not. With his third album, Extinction Level Event (Final World Front), came the smash single Gimme Some More that reached #6 in UK singles charts. Another transatlantic success single was the collaboration with Janet Jackson on What’s It Gonna Be? that reached #11 in US and UK.

Rhymes’ career continued to collect further success as he tirelessly kept producing albums and hits, gaining a worldwide audience and recognition. His fifth album, in keeping with the religious theme, titled Genesis, produced more than one hit single as Busta showcased his impressive collection of collaborators such as Mary J Blige, P Diddy and Kelis. The album was powered by the hit single What It Is featuring Kelis and Break Ya Neck, as well as the highly successful single Pass The Courvoisier Part II which featured Pharrell and P Diddy. Despite the bag of successful singles, the album failed to impress on an equal level as his previous work and received mixed reviews.

Nonetheless, Rhymes was riding a high wave. He continued to produce and release albums like none other and soon enough his dreams came true as his eight studio album, The Big Bang, became #1 on the US Billboard Top 200. The album sold over 209 000 copes, was the highest charting album in the UK as it peaked at #19 and featured guest appearances by Raekwon, Nas and Dr Dre. The album showcased some of his most creative cuts to date such as Touch It, I Love My Chick featuring Kelis, Will.I.Am and In The Ghetto.

Rumours of a tenth studio album has circled the musical industry titled Extinction Level Event 2 (E.L.E 2) in collaboration with the Canadian producer Boi-1da, and should showcase collaborations on singles with likes of Tiesto, Diplo, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne. Rhymes has also launched his own label titled Conglomerate Records showcasing a roster with the likes of N.O.R.E and Spliff Star.

Busta Rhymes is one of hip-hop’s biggest legends, having curved and shaped the perception of hip-hop worldwide and he remains one of the most prominent influences on the genre. With so much steady success in the past, with tenfold of hits to his name, one can only look ahead with equal wonder.
